As part of Education on the Hoof the team deliver INSET (In Service Training) to raise the awareness of the fascinating history of Gypsies and Travellers and their contribution to the longevity and richness of Appleby Fair.
Education on the Hoof is the name of the education project that has been running for many years at Appleby Fair.
Traveller Education was once again represented at Appleby Fair in the tent on the hill and training sessions and exhibition in the village.
The aim of “Education on the Hoof” is to promote the role of Traveller Education Services in supporting educational access for all Gypsy and Traveller children. It is a chance to meet parents on their own terms as well as the experience of being part of Europe’s biggest Gypsy Horse Fair.

We would like to thank the Fair organisers and all the Travellers who have made us so welcome. Please get in touch if you can help each year.
Funding came from the Department for Education and Skills and local authorities contributed ‘in kind’ by sending their staff to work on the project.
Staff from Services in Surrey, Doncaster, North Yorkshire, Wakefield, Oxfordshire, Kent, Hertfordshire and Norfolk as well as Bolton Sure Start worked together to deliver training, run children’s activities, sell workpacks and books and meet parents and members of the public.
Lancaster Basic Skills Tutors ran a hugely successful art project to produce a banner painted onto silk.
Cumbria had a display of art work made in local Primary Schools in the weeks leading up to the Fair and Connexions and the Library Service had mobile units there for the first time.
Training was offered to various professionals, including the police who have made great strides forward in Cumbria in developing their policy towards Travellers.
We had our fair share of mud but the sun shone either side of the weekend and the project was judged a success my most of the people we talked to.

As part of Education on the Hoof the team deliver INSET (In Service Training) to raise the awareness of the fascinating history of Gypsies and Travellers and their contribution to the longevity and richness of Appleby Fair. INSET is aimed at those interested in learning more about the history of Gypsies and Travellers and the Appleby Fair. It takes place every year to coincide with the fair and is attended by Teachers, Other Professionals, the general public and Gypsies and Travellers.
The INSET, delivered in the supper room at Appleby Town was very successful this year. It attracted audiences from a variety of agencies from all parts of the country. Some TES services have initiated an annual programme, which involved many different agencies from their counties travelling by coach to participate in the INSET and spend the day at the fair. These agencies included Sure Start, Health Services, Fire Service, LEO Officers, EWO, Environmental Health Connexions and Multicultural Agencies.
There was a welcome involvement with Cumbria TES and their local schools. The TES of Cumbria worked with their Advisory Service to run a competition with the local schools about the fair. A prize was awarded to each winning school and the artwork was displayed in the Supper Room, and both local people and Travellers were able to view it.
Evaluations from the Training were very positive, and the audiences reached were very varied. A separate Training session was delivered to the Police Service who showed a very positive interest in following up their own Race Equalities Training regarding Gypsy Travellers.
The DFES, local curriculum Advisors and teachers from all areas supported the INSET. If there is any future interest for attending the INSET or being involved in the project next year please contact Pat Barr at Surrey TESS 01932 794031.
Lee Fair is the oldest chartered fair in the country dating from 1136. Gypsies first went to the fair in the 1540's and have been supporting it ever since.
The Fair, in Appleby-in-Westmorland, is the most famous of the Traveller Fairs in England and attracts people from all over the world.
